Having difficulties in memorizing when you study?
By Heart
Students forget easily what they've studied in most recent day? Except, students who are good in memory, they cannot remember all the detailed information what they got from study.
Sometime, learning BY_HEART is a critical thing! Can you learn 100 words by-heart within a week?
Even for a 6-word telephone numbers (682930), we forget it easily due to a light concentration and mindlessness.
Let me tell you about from my experiences.
Pali Language
As I'm a student in monastic, I have to study Pali (an Indic language, northern India). I have to learn over 500 (short words) and definitions of 300 - 500 words by heart in each level. Without forgetting, I do formulate and build A WORD by using those definitions, like formulating the equations in Math. At first, it is easy for me to remember 10 (short Pali words) in a day, but not (3of10) definitions which I apply them in formulating/ building a Pali word. After a week of learning them by heart, I forget the words that I studied in very first days. Not only that happens to me but also it does to most students who do not know the method of memorizing (learning by heart) and remembering them! For e.g., when you learn a word "development" in English, you have to know whether it is Adj. or Noun or Verb or etc... In a word "Development", the root word is "develop" and bound morpheme (suffix) is "_ment". Develop (root word) + ment (suffix) = development (noun). It looks like simple equation.
More than simple
It's not that simple in Pali Language. You have to know the short word which defines the rule to form a Pali word and must have understanding of interaction between definitions. Like definitions for equations in geometry, definitions for concepts in Physics, definitions for organic equations in Chemistry. When studying them, you have to remember the correct meaning of each definition so that you can formulate the correct equation. Nothing Can Be Done Without Effort! I want to share some tips on "how to memorize words or definitions and how to remember those without any lost in your memory".
Long Time Memory
Firstly, I want to ask you a question!
"Have you ever tried to meditate/ focus your mind to get a concentration?"
May be you've tried once or more! But the concentration you got doesn't last for a long time. A Long time means what, 15 minutes or an hour, and why not? It is because of the mind which ever try and tend to be busy like a bee and of the method we apply, is not right!
How can we measure our concentration?
Is there anything else to measure the concentration like a ruler? Sound interesting! Measuring does not matter in this case. So, what does matter? A practice does matter! Practicing your mind is the first step toward concentration. Try again and again!
For e.g., you have an hour of study time. You have to learn 10 words (including meanings) in an hour by heart. So, what do you get to do and how will you learn 10 words by-heart within an hour without forgetting any single word?
Today, we, students, have got many gadgets (cell phone, iPods, Zen, iPhone, Mp4 players, and so on) in our hands! They eat our precious time and are causes to be busy and kill a lifetime of the concentration on study! Neglect them, close them, power off them and keep them away from you while you are studying.
Tips
Tips are coming straight to you as steps as follow.
- Set the timer about 3 - 5 minutes whether count up or count down.
- Keep your eye close and try to focus on your nose where breathe in and breathe out do.
- Ignore the things happening around you.
- Don't let your mind in a picnic, stay focus on the continuous breathing for 15 seconds.
- Now, start counting the numbers slowly like 1....12....123.....1234.....12345.....123456...... 1234567.......12345678........123456789.........1234567891..........
- Then restart the counting slowly like.... 1, 12, 123, 1234, 12345, …...., 1234567891
- When time's up, open you eye slowly and stay on counting the numbers for a moment.
- Now, you can start learn the vocabulary (a set of words & meanings) with the help of concentration.
In Practical
Now you are memorizing 10 words and meanings, (memorizing means lean by heart)
- Abbey (n): a- a monastery ruled by an abbot. b- a convent ruled by an abbess
- Abduct (v): a- to seize and take away by force. b- To draw or spread away from a position.
- Abeyance (n): a lapse in succession during which there is no person in whom a title is vested .
- Abjure (v): a- to renounce upon oath, b- to reject solemnly
- Abrasive (v): wear off; wear down by rubbing or scraping; rub against an object; strike against
- Bracken (n) : fern (type of plant)
- Braille (n): system of writing for the blind where configurations of raised dots represent letters and numerals
- Braise (v) : sauté and then simmer slowly (of meat)
- Brawl (v) : quarrel; participate in a noisy fight, (n): noisy fight or quarrel, punch-up, wrangle, scrap
- Breech (n) : short pants; pants; rear part of gun behind the barrel
How do you memorize them? Whether by continuous order or by redundancy order or by counting 1, 12, 1234, 12345 and so on?
Which one is the best for you to remember quickly and deeply bold in your memory?
Try to memorize the counting way I suggested above.
Do memorizing, 1. Abbey (for 2 times), then move to next word like counting method. Like this ......,
Concentration does matter here! Now, memorize the words as follow.
- 1.abbey (n): ….. (2x)
1. abbey (n): …..
- 2. abduct(v):...... (2x)
1. abbey (n): …..
- 2. abduct(v):......
- 3. abeyance (n): ….. (2x)
1. abbey (n): …..
- 2. abduct(v):......
- 3. abeyance (n): …..
- 4. abjure (v): ….. (2x)
1. abbey (n): …..
- 2. abduct(v):......
- 3. abeyance (n): …..
4. abjure (v): …..
5. abrasive (v):…… (2x)
Now, you've memorized 1 to 4 for Do up to no.10 like this.
You do counting like this. You will easily remember 1 to 9 when you reach No.10.
- Do counting from 1 to 10 for 3times.
- You will not forget them for today. Do you think is it finished?
- When you wake up tomorrow morning, they are gone because of No Backup.
- In computer, we make a backup to keep file prevent from losing. Like this, we have to back up the words by thinking, reflecting and saying them back at night (before you sleep).
- You remember them easily when you wake up because of a Backup!
- Make sure, you have a practice of Back up in exact time. (E.g., Backup at 9:00 PM every night).
Not only you can use this method in memorizing the vocabulary but also you can try this in other subjects such as equations in chemistry, theory in physics, terms in Biology and so on.
BCM
For me, I learn the words by using this BCM (Bee Counting Method) and everyday I think / say back (Back up) words or meanings I've memorized in previous days and today.
By doing this in routine,
- You do not forget the words or meanings or definitions you learn.
- You won't have any difficulty with memorizing or remembering anymore!
- You, yourself, will be surprised when you reach over 200 words.
- Stay on the line of concentration after you done study.
I'm pretty sure that your memory power will be improved by doing this BCM every day.
Don't forget to meditate/ focus your mind by counting the numbers! Because it is some kind a medicine to kill the stress or strong feeling or lust or angry! Side effect of this medicine is a satisfaction.
Exception
Every human being has different memory powers. Some are very good in memory like a genius and some are crappy like an idiot. But don't give up yourself for any situation.
Do not lie yourself whether you really remember what you memorize or not. To get a long time concentration, you do have to practice yourself by BCM.
Notes:
In Myanmar: Southeast Asia Golden Country, 90 out of 100 Theravada Buddhist Monks do back up every day. Because they do have to remember whatever they have learned by heart and they have to apply them in Practical works like in Meditation, in Dharma Talking, in Writings, and so on.
These tips are innocently coming out of my experiences for being a Buddhist monk as well as a monastic student.
Methods that I used to solve the difficulties in study are helpful a lot because of meditation and concentration. The more you practice, the less the difficulties will be.
