Are you wondering why you need to go to a vet tech school? One reason to apply for this program is because it will lead to a career that is high demand. There are many people who own pets today. Many people are needed to help serve pet owners and of course their pets. The right person for the job has to really care about animals and will want to make a positive difference in the lives of dogs and cats, and other pets.
The veterinary tech assists in the medical office with pets that need vaccinations, medication, grooming, and other types of treatment. Of course the pet will usually need comforting while under care, but sometimes the pet owner will need as much or even more attention than the animal. This is why the tech needs to be able to comfort people as well as pets.
The person looking to get into the program needs to have a high school diploma or GED. The program concentrates on math, anatomy, chemistry, and the natural sciences. So the applicant with this back ground will have a good chance of being accepted into the program.
Those who show on their application volunteer work will also have a better chance of entering the program. There is volunteer work available, for instance, in animal shelters. Some veterinary offices will accept volunteers, but the applicant should not expect to work directly with animals. But at least the applicant will have a chance to see first hand how a animal medical facility works.

The tech has to be confident when instructing a pet owner. The vet tech also is responsible for logging information in patient files. She therefore needs good writing skills.
Specimen collecting and testing is one of the primary responsibilities of the tech. This is a major part of the training. The tech will also prepare the animal for surgery and the operating room as well. She will be responsible for the instruments and in some cases assist in the actual surgery.
The tech also routinely handles the teeth cleaning or dental prophylaxes. This is usually performed by the more experienced vet tech. Pet owners need to be reminded about the importance of this procedure.
For those who are looking for a career, there are many areas to work. For instance, one can work in a zoo or other type of wildlife habitat. The military also has a need for the vet tech. The military has many dogs in service that need constant medical attention.
The same is true for police departments that use canines for police work; the canine unit has to be in top shape at all times as well and have regular medical treatment. There are many more areas where people with a vet tech certificate can work today. But the job is for those who care about animals. Those seeking to go into the work only for the money might not be prepared for this rewarding but challenging calling.
